Case Assignment
How to assign, reassign, and bulk-assign cases to lawyers with workload distribution visibility.
Last updated: July 2026
Overview
As a manager, you have full authority to assign any case in the firm to any lawyer, reassign ongoing cases during transitions, and distribute workload fairly across your team. Case assignment is handled primarily from the Cases page.
Assigning a Single Case
- Navigate to Cases from the sidebar.
- Click the case title or row to open the case detail view.
- Click Edit in the top-right corner of the case detail panel.
- Locate the Assigned Lawyer dropdown. It lists all active lawyers registered in your firm.
- Select the appropriate lawyer and click Save.
The assigned lawyer will receive an in-app notification and email alert (if enabled) informing them of the new assignment.
Bulk Assignment
When you need to assign multiple cases at once — for example, after onboarding a new lawyer — use the bulk assignment feature:
- On the Cases list, check the checkboxes on the left of each case row you want to assign.
- A contextual toolbar appears at the top of the list once at least one case is selected.
- Click Actions in the toolbar, then choose Assign to Lawyer.
- Select the target lawyer from the dropdown and confirm.
Reassignment Workflow
When a lawyer leaves or a case requires a different expert, follow the reassignment workflow:
- Open the case and click Edit.
- Change the Assigned Lawyer dropdown to the new lawyer.
- In the Handoff Note field that appears, add context for the incoming lawyer: current status, pending actions, upcoming hearings, and any client communication points.
- Save the case. Both the outgoing and incoming lawyers receive notifications.
Workload Distribution
Before assigning, check the workload balance by hovering over a lawyer's name in the Assigned Lawyer dropdown — a tooltip shows their current open case count. For a more detailed breakdown, visit Reports → Team to compare active caseloads across the team.
