Communicate in real time with colleagues and clients through the built-in chat.
Last updated: July 2026
Opening the Chat Page
Click Chat in the left sidebar to open the messaging center. The page is divided into two panels: the conversations list on the left and the active message thread on the right.

Starting a New Conversation
- Click the New Conversation button (pencil icon) at the top of the conversations panel.
- In the search field, type the name of the team member or client you want to contact.
- Select the contact from the results.
- A new conversation thread opens — type your first message and press Enter or click Send.
Sending Messages & Attachments
Inside any conversation you can:
- Send text — type in the input bar and press Enter.
- Attach files — click the paperclip icon to attach documents, PDFs, or images. Files uploaded here are stored in AdlDesk and can be linked to a case document later.
- React to messages — hover over any message and click the emoji button to add a quick reaction.
Real-Time Features
- Typing indicator — when the other party is composing a message, a "typing…" indicator appears below the thread.
- Read receipts — double checkmarks indicate the message has been read by the recipient.
- Online status — a green dot next to a contact's avatar indicates they are currently active in AdlDesk.
Group Chats for Case Collaboration
To create a group conversation for a specific case team:
- Click New Conversation and select multiple participants.
- Give the group a name (e.g., "Case 2024/450 Team").
- Click Create Group.
Group chats are ideal for coordinating between co-counsel, paralegals, and support staff working on the same matter.
Searching Conversations
Use the search bar at the top of the conversations list to search by contact name or keyword. The search scans message content as well, making it easy to find a discussion thread about a specific case or topic.
Tip: Mute conversations that are not immediately relevant by clicking the three-dot menu on the conversation and selecting Mute. You will still receive messages but without notification sounds.
Important: Chat messages between lawyers and clients may be subject to professional conduct rules in your jurisdiction. Do not use the chat to provide formal legal advice — use official written correspondence for that purpose.
